It is highly recommended by manufacturers that gas appliances be serviced once a year, especially ga
s fires due to their complexity and flue issues. A gas service will prolong the appliance’s life by ensuring it operates safely and efficiently.
Should your gas fire need an annual service or is not working as it should be and is in need of a repair, please contact us and we will be happy to send one of our Alliance Gas Safe registered, gas fire qualified specialists.
A typical gas fire service will include: gas fire serviced, a gas test, chimney flue checked using smoke pellets, coals or radients cleaned and revamped, if necessary to pass the safety standards. Please be aware that this is a typical gas fires service, but as you aware gas fires do differ somewhat.
At Alliance we have built up a wealth of experience in replacing existing gas fires as well as brand new installations. Our gas fire engineers are regularly in contact with the UK’s leading gas fire manufactures and suppliers.
However before you purchase a new gas fire you will need to provide the supplier with certain measurements and other information such as what flue type you have, as not every gas fire is suitable for every home. This latter piece of information is easily determined simply by looking at your roof.
There tend to be three main types.

A chimney will accept all types of gas fires as well as solid fuel fires. Inside a room a chimney breast can easily be seen with alcoves either side of your fireplace.

New properties tend to be fitted with Pre-cast flues. These are made of rectangular hollow concrete or clay blocks that travel vertically, up through the cavity wall of your property. Therefore, in the room you are likely to have a flat wall instead of the alcoves of a traditional chimney.

Pre-fabricated flues, usually made of a metal interlocking flue connected to a flue box, with a metal terminal on your roof. In the room you can expect to have a flat wall with no traditional chimney alcoves.
If your home has none of the flues described above then, the fire may have a flue that goes straight through the external wall. These are termed Powerflue or Balanced Flue fires. These fanned flue appliances use an electric fan to expel flue gases. Therefore, you can expect a certain amount of noise.
Finally there are Catalytic gas fires. The combustion gases being vented out of your home are converted into non-harmful gases including carbon dioxide and water vapour. Therefore the fire needs no flue at all.
